Taking Risks: Not Being Afraid to Keep Your Life Dangerous Enough So That You Can Grow

Dangerous. This can be a scary word for some people. It is dangerous to speed down the freeway weaving in and out of traffic. It is dangerous to stand on the edge of a building and look down. There are many kind of dangers in life, but there is a specific kind of danger that I am talking about. I am talking about things that scare you, get you out of your comfort zone, and require more than one word answers. I am talking about taking risks! If you lived life without taking any risks, well, you would never truly live. Life is all about the unknown and the adventure around the corner. As young adults, we have no idea about where life can take us. For the most part we have a vision or somewhat of a plan, but we can’t really know where we will be in twenty years. If we want to be anywhere, though, we have to be willing to take some risks. Here are some risks that you should take and that will help you to live life more abundantly:

  1. Attend a church--Now I am assuming that many of you reading this already do, but maybe you don’t? Well, I challenge you to take a risk and attend one. Find a place where you can plug into the Christian community. Give back to those around you. It is well known that people our age are dropping out of church, so take the risk, be the change, and try church.

  2. Invest in relationships--This is a huge risk that scares people. People don’t want to invest in others because humans are known for letting fellow humans down. It is hard, but truly investing in another person can help you to grow. You can learn more about people, how they operate, and how to relate. Relating to others is one of the best life skills that you could ever learn. It will help you now and for the rest of your life!

  3. Spend a little on adventure--Experience is something that many of us like. We want to know what it is like to live in this place, to travel here, or to try this food. There is nothing wrong with spending some of your money on adventure. Take a risk and do that adventurous thing you have always wanted to do. It will open your eyes to a new world. Life is not all about money. It’s okay to risk spending some on something that you really want to do. Better yet, do it with some friends so you can invest in relationships and enjoy adventure at the same time!

  4. Read more--For some this may not be a risk, but for some it may be. Pull out those books you’ve always wanted to read and read them. Learn about others with biographies. Books help us to grow. You may risk time reading them, but it is usually worth it. If you don’t know where to start, I would recommend Unbroken. This book is a big one that will challenge you. It will be a risk for you to read, but you will be ever so glad that you did.

  5. Understand the world around you--This risk is one that many people want to avoid. Most people our age rely on social media to keep us up with the news. While that is okay, take a risk and try to understand why. Why did the United States send bombs into Syria? Take time to research and understand. This will make you a better person, and you’ll be able to speak with confidence on a subject that others know nothing about. Stay informed and understand why. It is a risk that we should all take. It will make us better people in the long run.

  6. Have an opinion--Today, many people have a preference and an opinion but are afraid to share it. People are afraid of being wrong. They want to know what others have to say before they speak up. Why are we scared to have an opinion that differs from someone else? This helps not only us to grow, but it helps others to grow as well. Friendly disagreement can shape opinions and make them stronger. Build up your thoughts about a subject and let your opinion be known. Be kind in the way that you present it, though. Never condemn someone, and always be polite when speaking with others and disagreeing with them.

I want to leave you with some words of encouragement. Life can be hard sometimes but be willing to step out and take a few risks. Once you’ve done it a few times it will get easier. The words that come to my mind with taking risks are from the Disney movie Cinderella. Cinderella’s mother told her to, “Have courage and be kind.” I think that fits nicely with all that I said above. Have courage to step out and try things. Don’t be afraid of what others think. All in all though, be kind to those that disagree with you. So, let’s step out into the world, make a difference, and have courage to take risks and be kind to others!
