Congratulations! You have reached the point in your life where you are starting to look at internships and dream about what it will look like to have a real job. Right now all of these opportunities look and sound exciting, but what does it really look like to launch into your dream internship and possibly your career? Today, I want to offer you three tips to focus on taking this step in your life.
Tip 1: Consider Your Goals It is really important for you to see how your overall goals line up with the experience that you can gain from an internship. Does the internship allow you to network in your field? Are you able to identify a certain skill that the internship offers that will be helpful to you later on? These type of questions are important for you to consider because it will help you figure out what internships are worth your time to pursue further and which internships to let go of.
Tip 2: Do Your Research Once you identify an internship that alines with your goals, you will need to do some research. You should try to think through possible questions you might get asked during your interview, learn about the company or the organization, and if you can read the professional biography of the person who could be your boss, I suggest doing so. The more information that you know before the interview, the easier it will likely be for you to answer the questions that you are asked and to figure out possible issues that you may want to discuss before you agree to sign a contract.
Tip 3: Prepare to be Rejected and Surprised Rejection is hard. It is really hard when you thought you found the perfect internship, but even in the disappointment, you can keep on learning about your strengths and weaknesses from an employee standpoint, then you can work on the areas that you struggle to make a good impression in. You will not be able to change overnight, but you will learn more about yourself and what works for you. However, do not be surprised when the right internship does come along and the pieces all fit together. In the moment it sounds annoying to hear this, but God really knows exactly what you need and when you need it. He is not surprised by anything that is going on in your life, and He’s simply asking you to trust Him with the details. Well, those are my three tips on how to snag your dream internship! As I look back on my own personal journey of figuring out where to intern, it was not always an easy path to walk, but just like my own story points to God’s faithfulness to me, so will your's in His timing.
